Employ Milwaukee, Milky Way Tech Hub and UNCOM launch AI Ready program focused on youth workforce development
Employ Milwaukee has partnered with Milky Way Tech Hub and UNCOM to launch AI Ready After School Future Workforce Program, a four week initiative designed to introduce high school students to digital literacy, artificial intelligence, and workforce readiness skills.
The program, which will serve WIOA In School youth, runs from March 2 through March 26, 2026, meeting twice weekly in an after school format. Organizers say the initiative is intended to provide early exposure to AI tools and digital competencies that are increasingly relevant across industries.
AI Ready includes hands on, project based learning focused on practical applications of artificial intelligence, including resume development, interview preparation, organization, and productivity tools. Students will also receive instruction in digital professionalism, cybersecurity basics, and responsible technology use.
Julie Cayo, president and CEO of Employ Milwaukee, said the partnership reflects a broader shift within workforce development systems toward integrating artificial intelligence into youth programming.
“As AI and automation continue to reshape industries, our region must invest in the skills that tomorrow’s jobs will demand,” Cayo said. “The U.S. Department of Labor encourages workforce systems to strategically use Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds to help young people develop artificial intelligence skills, from foundational AI literacy and digital competencies to more advanced training opportunities embedded across workforce programs. This partnership ensures our youth gain meaningful exposure to AI learning and are equipped to compete in an evolving labor market.”
Milky Way Tech Hub founder Nadiyah Johnson said the organization views early access to digital and AI education as critical to long term economic mobility.
“Our mission at Milky Way Tech Hub is to ensure young people are prepared, empowered, and positioned to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world,” Johnson said. “By partnering with Employ Milwaukee and UNCOM, we are meeting youth where they are and giving them practical, future ready skills that build confidence, expand opportunity, and strengthen our regional workforce.”
Employ Milwaukee and UNCOM will support program implementation and youth engagement, while Milky Way Tech Hub will deliver curriculum and instruction.
Program leaders say AI Ready aligns with regional workforce priorities focused on digital fluency, career readiness, and equitable access to emerging career pathways. Organizers also describe the initiative as a scalable model that could expand into additional youth and adult programming in the future.
